Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for help with the cost of a funeral. This will be assessed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and may be based on what benefits you are currently in receipt of or, in the case of losing a partner, if you were under the state pension age when they died.
The application for such help, is freely accessible, but can appear rather complicated. Some funeral directors are able to give help and guidance on applications and can if you so desire, help you complete them. Bereavement benefits include:
Bereavement Payment - a one-off lump sum you claim when your spouse or civil partner dies.
Social Fund Funeral Payment - Help towards the cost of a funeral from the social fund.
Widowed Parentís Allowance if you have dependent children.
Bereavement Allowance if you don't have dependent children.
If you think you may be eligible for help, or if your not sure, please ask, and your funeral director can help you find out. For more information on help with funeral costs, please visit the DirectGov Website.
